Professor James Chalmers took up the Rhodes Professorship of Experimental
Therapeutics and Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Oxford in November
2025. Previously, he served as the Asthma + Lung UK Chair of Respiratory
Research at the University of Dundee and as a Consultant Respiratory Physician.
James leads a translational research group focused on developing new treatments for bronchiectasis and is also interested in COPD, pneumonia, and associated conditions. He has published over 500 peer-reviewed papers, including landmark trials that have changed practice in bronchiectasis.
He has chaired five international guidelines panels, including the recent ERS
bronchiectasis guidelines. He is the Chief Editor of the European Respiratory
Journal.
